Why I Believe in Canicross

Canicross isn’t just something I teach – it’s something I’ve experienced firsthand with my own dogs.

My English Shepherd, Izzy, benefited enormously from canicross during her rehabilitation. It gave her a positive outlet for both her physical and mental energy, helped rebuild her confidence and strengthened the partnership between us. Watching the difference it made to her only reinforced my belief that canicross is about so much more than simply going for a run.

Our journey was even featured in The Sun, highlighting how canicross helped Izzy through her rehabilitation. If you’d like to read more about our story, you can read the article here.

Not Quite Ready for a Group?

If the idea of joining a group class feels a little daunting, don’t worry. Many people choose to start with a one to one session to build confidence, learn the basics and make sure both they and their dog feel comfortable before joining others.

One to one sessions allow us to work at your own pace, answer any questions you have and give you the confidence to enjoy canicross from the very beginning.

If canicross isn’t quite what you’re looking for, you might also enjoy one of my other activities, including:

🐾 Agility β€“ Build teamwork, confidence and body awareness.

🐾 Gundog Training β€“ Develop focus, self-control and an excellent partnership.

🐾 Trick Training β€“ Keep your dog mentally stimulated while having fun together.

🐾 Scent Work β€“ Tap into your dog’s incredible sense of smell through rewarding search games.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be a runner to get started?

Not at all. Canicross is suitable for complete beginners as well as more experienced runners. Sessions are tailored to your current fitness level, and we build confidence gradually for both you and your dog.

Can any dog do canicross?

Many dogs can enjoy canicross, but it’s important that they’re physically mature, healthy and enjoy running. We’ll always make sure the activity is appropriate for your dog’s age, breed and fitness.

What equipment do I need?

A properly fitted canicross harness for your dog, a waist belt for you and a bungee line are the essential pieces of equipment. I’ll be happy to advise you on choosing the right kit before you get started.

Is canicross safe for my dog?

Yes, when introduced correctly. Learning how to warm up, cool down, build fitness gradually and recognise when your dog needs a rest are all important parts of training.

What if I’m not very fast?

That’s absolutely fine! Canicross isn’t about being the fastest runner. It’s about enjoying exercise with your dog, working together as a team and improving your own fitness at a pace that suits you. Whether you’re a complete beginner, enjoy a gentle jog or already run regularly, sessions are tailored to both your fitness level and your dog’s ability. The only competition is with yourself – the aim is simply to enjoy getting out with your dog and having fun together.
