Dog Training Northampton – Life Skills

Every dog owner wants the same thing – a dog they can enjoy taking anywhere. A dog that walks nicely on the lead, comes back when called, greets people politely and settles calmly when needed. Through fun, games based dog training in Northampton, I’ll help you build those everyday skills while strengthening the relationship between you and your dog.

What You’ll Learn Through Dog Training

🐾 Boundary Training
Teaching your dog to make good choices around doors, gates, food, people and exciting situations, helping them develop calmness and self control.

🐾 NOYB (None of Your Business) Training
Helping your dog learn that not everything in the environment needs a reaction, reducing unnecessary arousal and building confidence in everyday situations.

🐾 Bucket Emptying
Learning how to recognise when your dog’s emotional bucket is becoming full and using appropriate activities to help them decompress, relax and reset.

🐾 Managing Arousal
Understanding how excitement, frustration and stress affect behaviour, and teaching your dog the skills to regulate their own emotions.

🐾 Focus and Engagement
Building a partnership where your dog chooses to engage with you, even when distractions are present.

🐾 Recall and Loose Lead Walking
Developing reliable everyday skills through games and positive reinforcement, rather than relying on constant correction.

🐾 Confidence and Resilience
Helping your dog become more adaptable, thoughtful and able to cope with new situations.

🐾 Understanding Why Behaviour Happens
Rather than simply stopping unwanted behaviour, we’ll look at what’s driving it and teach your dog the skills they need to make better choices.

My aim isn’t simply to stop unwanted behaviours. It’s to understand why they’re happening in the first place. By changing your dog’s emotional response, building confidence and teaching them how to regulate themselves, we create lasting changes that make everyday life easier for both of you.

What to Expect from Your Training!

Every dog is different, which is why every training plan is tailored to you and your dog. We’ll look at the behaviours you’d like to improve, but more importantly, we’ll look at why they’re happening. Using games based training and practical exercises, I’ll teach you how to communicate more clearly with your dog and help them develop the skills they need to make better choices. My aim is to give you the knowledge and confidence to continue making progress long after our sessions have finished.

Frequently Asked Questions!

Is this suitable for all dogs?

Yes. Whether you have a puppy, adolescent, rescue dog or older companion, everyday life skills benefit every dog. My dog training in Northampton is always tailored to your dog’s individual needs, experience and personality.

My dog already knows sit and down. Will this still help?

Absolutely. Life skills go far beyond basic obedience. The focus is on helping your dog make good decisions, regulate their emotions and become easier to live with in everyday situations.

Can this help with pulling on the lead and recall?

Yes. Many of the games and exercises we use naturally improve recall, loose lead walking, focus and engagement, making everyday walks far more enjoyable.

My dog gets over excited. Can you help?

Yes. A big part of my training is helping dogs learn to manage their arousal levels. By understanding why your dog becomes over excited and teaching them appropriate coping strategies, we can help them become calmer and more thoughtful.

Is this suitable before trying agility, scent work or gundog training?

Definitely. Strong life skills provide the foundations for everything else your dog does. Whether your goal is agility, gundog training, scent work or simply enjoying everyday life together, these skills will give both you and your dog the best possible start.

“I never in a million years thought I’d get this out of holly but we did and I cried I was very happy this happened due to Christine not giving up on us and not letting me give up and getting me to stick by it.”
